Understanding visibility and reflective technology helps you choose the right product for your safety, branding, or garment needs. Below is a clear breakdown of commonly used terms in the industry.
Types of reflective materials
Reflective materials fall into two main categories:
👉 Engineering or sheeting reflective materials
These are durable reflective surfaces designed for fixed installations like road signs, vehicle markings, advertising boards and other permanent or semi‑permanent applications. They provide strong, reliable visibility when light shines on them.
👉 Reflective fabrics and tapes
Reflective fabrics and tapes are materials designed to shine brightly when light hits them, helping people stay visible in low‑light or night‑time conditions. They are commonly added to clothing, uniforms, bags and accessories to improve safety. When lights shine on these surfaces, they return the light back toward its source, making the wearer much easier to see.
🔦 Both types of reflective material require an external light source, such as vehicle headlights or a searchlight, to illuminate them. When light hits the surface, it reflects straight back to its source, improving visibility. Each category offers different grades and performance levels to suit specific applications and safety needs.
⚠️ Encapsulated reflective material
Encapsulated reflective material has tiny glass beads that are sealed under a protective layer. This sealed layer keeps the beads safe from dirt, moisture and wear, which helps the material last longer and stay bright. Because the beads are protected, encapsulated reflective products usually perform better and stay reflective for a longer time than open‑bead options.
⚠️ Fluorescence
Fluorescent or glow‑in‑the‑dark products need to absorb light, usually daylight or strong indoor light, before they can work. After charging for a few hours, they will give off a soft glow in darkness. This glow fades over time and must be recharged again. They do not shine when headlights or torchlight hits them; they only release the light they previously stored.
⚠️ Glitter
Glitter reflective material is designed purely for visual sparkle in daylight. It contains tiny particles that catch the sun or indoor light and create a shimmering effect, making garments or accessories look bright and decorative. However, this shine is only cosmetic. Glitter does not return light to its source, so it offers no reflective or safety benefit at night. Once it’s dark, the sparkle disappears completely, and the material provides no added visibility.
⚠️ Gloss
Gloss refers only to how a surface looks, not how well it reflects light. A glossy material can appear shiny because it has a smooth, polished finish, but that shine doesn’t mean it will help with visibility. In most cases, glossy surfaces have little or no true reflective performance, even though they look bright to the eye.
⚠️ Hi-viz - High visibility
Hi-viz, or high visibility, refers to clothing or materials made with very bright colours - often neon yellow, orange or lime - to help people stand out in low‑light conditions.
These colours improve visibility during the day or at dusk, but they do not reflect light at night. For night‑time safety, hi‑viz items must be paired with reflective strips or panels that shine when lights hit them.
⚠️ Luminosity
Luminosity describes how much a material appears to glow or stand out. It’s a broad term often used for products that either glow on their own (like glow‑in‑the‑dark materials) or look bright because of fluorescent colours.
⚠️ Neon fabrics and trims
Neon fabrics and trims use intensely bright colours, such as neon yellow, orange or lime, to create a bold, highly visible look. They stand out well in daylight and low‑light conditions, but they do not glow, shine or reflect at night - their visibility comes purely from colour, not from any reflective or luminous properties.
⚠️ Open bead reflective material
Open bead reflective material uses tiny glass beads that sit on the surface and remain exposed to the air. When light hits them, it is reflected directly back to its source, creating strong visibility. Because the beads aren’t sealed under a protective layer, this type of reflective is more affordable but tends to wear down faster than encapsulated versions.
⚠️ Prismatic reflective material
Prismatic reflective material uses tiny, engineered prisms, usually made from plastic, to bounce light back toward its source. Instead of relying on glass beads, it uses sharp, angular micro‑prisms that create a stronger, more focused return of light. This design makes prismatic reflective brighter, more durable and more efficient than open‑bead options, especially for high‑performance uses like road signs, vehicle markings and premium safety gear.
